I'm trying to make more illustrations and to get better at making digital illustrations, so for my 29 before 30 challenge (something I'm covering mainly on my other blog) I decided I would make at least one illustration every quarter. We're already in quarter two, so I'm going to show you the first two illustrations.

Dit jaar probeer ik om meer illustraties te maken. Eén van de manieren waarop ik dat probeer is om per kwartaal van mijn 29 before 30 challenge (waarover ik vooral op mijn andere blog schrijf) een nieuwe illustratie te maken voor de 29 before 30 update posts. Ondertussen is het tweede kwartaal al begonnen, dus kan ik de eerste twee illustraties tonen!


The first illustration was for the first quarter of this year, starting on January 24th (my birthday ;) ), so I went with a wintery theme. After I made a quick, messy sketch, I started digitizing the illustration in Adobe Illustrator. I'd never done something in this style, but it was fun figuring things out.

Het eerste kwartaal begon op 24 januari (mijn verjaardag!) en toen was het nog volop winter. Ik koos dus voor een winters thema voor mijn eerste illustratie. Ik maakte eerst een snelle schets op papier en gebruikte deze als basis voor mijn digitale illustratie in Adobe Illustrator. Ik had nog nooit iets digitaals gemaakt in deze stijl of werkwijze, dus dat was tof om uit te vissen (al zit ik dan ook altijd te vloeken als de meest doorwinterde zeelui, maar dat is bij mij het teken dat ik mij ook keihard aan het vastbijten ben in iets).


The second quarter started at the end of April and spring was in the air already, so it was obvious what the theme of this illustration was going to be. I really like the outcome of this one, it really does feel like spring to me. The process was pretty much the same as for the first illustration, but I did use more references for the flowers etc. I added some more random details compared to the first one and tried adding some shadow.

Next time I might try some more shadowing and maybe some texture? I'm also thinking of trying to do some illustrations in Photoshop, which I always stayed away from. But I'm up for the the challenge.

Aargh, I'm so curious to see the set of four illustrations side by side at the end of the year, I think it'll be awesome to see the progress in them! What do you think about my first steps in digital illustration?

Aan het einde van april begon het tweede kwartaal van mijn challenge en met de ontluiken van de blaadjes moest ik opnieuw niet ver zoeken naar inspiratie. Misschien ligt het aan de kersenbloesem blaadjes (ik ♥ kersenbloesems) maar ik ben best tevreden met deze illustratie. En dat gebeurd niet vaak. Mijn werkwijze was ongeveer hetzelfde van bij de eerste illustratie, maar ik gebruikte meer foto referenties. Ik stak er ook wat meer details in en probeerde ook wat meer schaduw te gebruiken.

Voor mijn volgende illustraties is dat iets waar ik zeker meer op wil werken, dat schaduwen, want afgedrukt zien mijn schaduwen er een beetje vreemd uit. Ik wil ook illustraties beginnen maken in Photohop (iep!), iets wat ik nog nooit echt een kans gegeven heb. Ik heb alleszins zin in die uitdaging!

Oew, ik kijk zo hard uit naar het einde van mijn challenge, zodat ik alle illustraties van deze reeks naast elkaar kan leggen. Ik denk dat dat er goed gaat uitzien! En hopelijk kan ik dan ook echt vooruitgang zien. Vinden jullie mijn eerste stappen in digitale illustraties geslaagd?

When I first got into graphic design I got really excited about all the cool gear I needed to buy. All those new toys! My excitement quickly faded, because everything seemed super pricey. So I thought I'd show you around my toolbox, talk about all my favourite tools and give you some tips on the tools you really need and how you can do things cheaper.

[NL] Toen ik me voor het eerst ontdekte welke materialen ik allemaal nodig had om aan mijn opleiding grafisch vormgeving te beginnen was ik super enthousiast. Zoveel nieuwe speelgoed! Tot ik de prijskaartjes zag natuurlijk. Vandaag neem ik jullie mee door mijn toolbox als grafisch vormgever, toon ik jullie mijn favoriete producten en geef ik een paar tips hoe het goedkoper ook kan.


Drawing tablet: I got my Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch M for my birthday and I don't think I could go without a drawing a tablet. It's a fairly simple model and not that expensive. I use it for all my work in Illustrator and for working on photos in Photoshop.

Back-up hard drive: You might think it's not a necessity to have a back-up hard drive, but trust me, it is. It's also very useful to store your old projects and files so they don't clutter computer's internal hard drive. I have a Seagate external hard drive which has been very reliable.

Sketchbooks: I really love the paper in the Seawhite sketchbooks so those are my go to sketchbooks when I need to pick a new one up. Making sketches before starting digital work is something I really believe in and having a sketchbook that fits your needs is a luxury every designer can afford.

Tekentablet: Sinds ik mijn Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch M voor mijn verjaardag kreeg kan ik echt niet meer zonder. De Intuos is een redelijk betaalbare tekentablet en hoewel het even wennen was om te tekenen en niet naar beneden te kijken (want er zit geen scherm in) heb ik het ondertussen wel onder de knie. Ik gebruik hem voor zo goed als al mijn werk in Illustrator en vaak ook wanneer ik foto's bewerk in Photoshop.

Back-up harde schijf:Een extra harde schijf lijkt misschien overbodig, maar mijn Seagate external hard drive heeft al een paar keer mijn vel gered, wanneer bestanden om onverklaarbare redenen verdwenen waren. Ik stockeer er ook al mijn afgewerkte oude projecten op zodat die geen onnodig veel plaats innemen om mijn pc.

Schetsboeken: Een goed schetsboek is onmisbaar om al die eerste schetsen en ideeën op papier te zetten. En om tussendoor ook te blijven oefenen. Mijn favoriete schetsboeken zijn die van Seawhite. Ik vind het papier in die boekjes perfect. Het kan even zoeken zijn naar wat je ligt, maar een schetsboek met de perfecte "fit" is iets dat iedere vormgever zich perfect kan veroorloven.



Mechanical pencils: I really like using mechanical pencils, since you never have to sharpen them. I've used a bunch of cheap ones for a long time, but then I treated myself to these Uni-ball Mitsubishi 0.5 pencils. I loved it immediately! The biggest difference for me was the way the lead felt on the paper, so much more control. + these things are sturdy as f.ck so they'll last for ever.

Brush Pen: I got the Pentel Pocket Brush pen a little while ago and it's my favourite brush pen since. I really like the feel + it's not to big, so it fits in all my pencil cases. Markers / fineliners: Whenever I want to clean up a sketch and make a nice, decent looking version of whatever I'm working on, I get my markers out. My current favourites are Uni Pin fineliners. They're also water proof, which is awesome for when I want to use them in combination with water colours.

Vulpotloden: Ik ben een grote fan van vulpotloden, aangezien je ze nooit hoeft te slijpen. Lange tijd gebruikte ik hele goedkope vulpotloden, maar een tijdje terug investeerde ik in mijn eerste Uni-ball Mitsubishi 0.5mm vulpotlood. Wat een verschil! Het loodje van het potlood zit zoveel stabieler vast in deze potloden. Ze zijn ook zo stevig, dat ik ze wellicht nooit hoef te vervangen.

Brush pen: Ik schreef eerder al een review blogpost over de Kuretake Water Brush pen en de Pentel Color Brush, maar sindsdien ben ik vooral fan van de Pentel Pocket Brush. Ik vind deze super in de hand liggen en hij is kort genoeg (i.t.t. de Colour Brush) om in iedere pennenzak te passen.

Markers / fineliners: Wanneer ik een nettere versie van mijn schets wil maken grijp ik vaak naar markers of fineliners. Mijn favoriete fineliners zijn momenteel de Uni Pin fineliners. Ze zijn ook watervast, heel handig aangezien ik ze ook graag gebruik in combinatie met aquarelverf.




Notebook: I like scribbling down my ideas and notes from briefs down in a separate notebook. Doesn't really matter what kind of notebook, although I really like it if they have dotted paper (like the one Flying Tiger often has).

Camera or phone: Having a high end camera is nice, but not really necessary. If you have a smart phone with a semi decent camera you can replace both your camera and your scanner with it. I always take quick pictures with my phone of the sketches I want to import in Illustrator or Photoshop, way quicker than using a scanner.

Computer: I'm using a four year old Windows laptop with a second screen as my set-up. I'm still very happy with my laptop, although the screen (sorry HP) sucks massively, that's why I needed to add an external screen to my set up. In my opinion it's unnecessary to overpay on Apple products, even when you're designer. Just pick whichever environment you're used to. I've worked with both, but I still like Windows best.

Notitieboek: Wat notitieboekjes betreft ben ik helemaal niet moeilijk. Ik hou van de goedkope schriftjes van Flying Tiger bijvoorbeeld. Als ik dan toch een eis zou stellen: graag met dotted pages in plaats van lijntjes. Daar kan je makkelijker ook een schets in kwijt.

Fototoestel of smartphone: Hoewel ik een spiegelreflex camera heb, gebruik ik hem eigenlijk bijna niet voor design werk. Ik ga vaker foto's nemen met de camera op mijn smartphone. Je kan trouwens ook gewoon foto's maken van je schetsen met je smartphone, veel sneller dan ze onder de scanner te leggen. Daarna importeer ik die foto's gewoon in Illustrator of Photoshop om er daar verder op te werken.

Computer: Ik gebruik een vier jaar oude Windows laptop en (afgezien van de vreselijke schermkwaliteit) ben ik er nog steeds tevreden mee. De kleuren van mijn scherm zijn zo slecht dat ik mij een extra monitor heb aangeschaft, zodat ik met een gerust hart foto's kan bewerken. Ik weet dat veel designers heel hard aan Apple zijn, maar volgens mij is dat niet per se nodig. Gebruik gewoon de omgeving waar je meest vertrouwd mee bent. Ik heb al met beide gewerkt en ik vind Windows nog steeds het handigst.
